Back to the gym!
It not like I’ve not worked out in a while but, yesterday was the first day that I felt like I was really “back”. Let me explain. In September 2010, I got fed up and finally committed myself to working out and losing weight. Things were going well and I had lost nearly 40 lbs. when I did something really stupid. I was trying to separate some froze turkey burgers with a very sharp knife (you know where this is going right?) and the knife slipped, cutting my ring finger. I got myself to the hospital and found out that I cut through both tendons, requiring surgery.
The next week, I had the tendons repaired and, for the next four months, I spent an average of twice a week in physical therapy. Initially, I think I went through a mild bit of depression because I couldn’t work out the way I wanted to. My bad eating habits slipped back and I all but avoided the gym.
During a meeting with my surgeon in June, he reinforced what he had told me previously — these injuries can take up to a year to heal and may require another surgery to address issues with range of motion. But, he also told me that I needed to get back to using my hand without restrictions as that is where the true healing would begin.
My first few trips back to the gym were a sad sight. I was basically at about 75% of where I was before my injury and felt terrible. I felt the wrist on my injured hand want to give way more than a few times and thought I was going to drop the weight on my head. But, a voice kept reminding me that I am still healing and that just a few months back, I couldn’t even hold this weight, much less press it over my head repeatedly.
Then, yesterday, I finally had a breakthrough! Though I still can’t lift as much weight as I had previously, I got through about 90% of my weightlifting routine. Then, I got trough 35 minutes on the treadmill at 4.4 mph, with varying incline, without getting winded. So, I worked out for over 1 1/2 hours and left feeling good for the first time in months.
Now that I know I can do it, it’s back to work. Oh, yeah, I’ve learned to be more careful around sharp knives, as well.
