The Reboot: Taking on the challenge of juice fasting
7/19/2011 was what I hope will be a special day for me. It was the day I started my juice fast. No, I’m not one of these fad diet people. I remember years ago trying fad diets and they always left me worse off and disappointed. I don’t even like the word “diet” because of the connotations that come with it. However, recently, my wife and I were watching the movie “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” and I couldn’t help but be inspired. The movie is about a man, Joe Cross, who, like me, was over 300 lbs. Joe was feeling that his weight was leading him to an early grave. When doctors and medicines couldn’t address his ailments, he looked into how the body could heal itself. So, for the next 60 days, he consumed fruit and vegetable juices and traveled some 3,000 miles, along the way talking to people about health. In his journey, he encounters Phil Staples, a truck driver who weighs 429 lbs. and suffers from the same immunity deficiency as Joe. To make a long story short, Joe eventually inspires Phil to make a change in his life and Phil takes on the challenge himself. In the end, Joe loses nearly 100 lbs. and Phil nearly 200 lbs.
Honestly, I do want the weight loss but, there was another aspect of it that attract me even more to this fast — the detox. I eat a lot of garbage. I love Chinese and Japanese take-out, pizza, ribs, Indian food (particularly Chicken Tikka Masala), Coca-Cola, Fudge Nut Sundae Ice Cream and a lot of other questionable food choices. What this means is that I have put a lot of not-so-good-for-me stuff in my system and the system now needs cleaning.
The first 3-4 days were the most challenging. On day two, I went to pick up some more fruits and vegetables and had to pass by some of my favorite fast food places. I felt like one of Pavlov’s dogs because the mere thought of some of them had me salivating. Also, I had only been used to drinking orange juice bought in a carton. When I felt adventurous, I would have apple cranberry or grape cranberry. Drinking juice with a vegetable in it was absolutely off-limits. But, if I wanted a change, I had to stick to my commitment. So, I bought kale greens, lemons, apples, pineapples, strawberries, cucumbers, wheat grass, and some protein powder and got to juicing. I’ll be switching things up soon but, my go-to drinks are the following:
2 Apples (Granny Smith or Red Delicious)
2-3 slices of Pineapple
1 slice of watermelon (rind removed)
1 scoop of protein powder (unflavored, if you can)
Lunch or Dinner:
7-9 Kale leaves
A handful of spinach leaves
3-4 Granny Smith Apples
Now, I have others but, these are the ones I can make most quickly. The key is to add a variety because I am deriving my nutrition from these and, of course, talking to my doctor.
Right now, I can’t say how long I’ll be on this fast. But, I am hoping to make it to 30 days. It’s already getting easier but it would be great if they could make a healthy juice that tastes like a Five Guys’ burger.
